Dear All,
Please find enclosed below notes from the 14th December meeting of the
Cambridge Atmospheric Carbon Action Group and the 1st December meeting of
the CPS/Cambridge Energy Forum:
1) Cambridge Atmospheric Carbon Action Group: "GLOBAL WARMING/CLIMATE
CATASTROPHE: WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?" CB1, 14th December

(also bottom of this email)
2) Cambridge Philosophical Society / Cambridge Energy Forum: "SUSTAINABLE
ENERGY" All day conference, Cavendish Laboratory, 1st December

(also

(Note that long links sometimes get broken in half, in which case it will be
necessary to reassemble both halves in web browser using copy/paste.)
I'd also be really grateful if people could let me know of any major events/
important consultation dates and/or publication of major reports coming up.
I enclose my limited understanding of some important events
(comments/corrections welcome).
Finally, I attach the concluding remarks made by Sustainable Energy speakers
at the the 1st December event.
I wish you a very Happy Christmas and a fortunate and succesful New Year,
Yours,
Steve Stretton

*Dates/Political Pressure Points early 2007??*
*Event *Cambridge City Council Publication of Sustainable Building addendum
to Cambirdge City Plan *Date: *Jan 2007 *Pressure Point *now/early Jan 2007
*Policy Measure: *Put pressure on council and developers to make new
buildings very low emissions *Contact: *Eithne Flannaghan 01223 457 170 /
write to her, or Ms Janine Richardson, The Guildhall.

*
*Contact Me + Geoff Wexler <gwexler at waitrose.com> for any more info. Useful
to write a letter/email pushing for new developments to be carbon neutral.*
*Event *Release of next IPCC report: *Date: *Feb/Mar 2007? *Pressure point*:
Immediately after the release *Policy Measure: *The science must be heard
loud and clear.
*Event *Publication of Energy White Paper: *Date: *Mar 2007? *Pressure Point
*Dec/Jan/Feb and immediately afterwards *Policy Measure:* Support Long-term
electricity markets for low-emissions electricity, e.g. by electricity min
price guarantees or loan guarantees contingent on electricity price (more
effective than direct subsidies). More R&D required in Energy Research
especially for our local high-tech companies. Adopt international designs
for nuclear; Support rapid deployment of CCS to create british experts.
Targets for energy capacity much more than current electricity use.
*Event *Publication of Climate Change Bill: *Date*: Spring? *Pressure Point:
* Dec/Jan/Feb and just before vote?? *Policy Measures*: More stringent and
more binding targets? Stringent medium term targets essential, as is a
concrete programme to acheive them.
*Event*: G8 summit *Date *June 7th? *Policy Measures*: Urgent Action on
climate change & energy. e.g coordinated carbon taxation or extend European
emissions cap and trading / successor to Kyoto. Cooperation on large-scale
investment in low emissions energy technology (Solar/CCS/Nuclear) required.
