Dear Committee,
Some news: Stephen, who has been in Korea the last 10 days, was taken ill
last week with a high fever. He has been transferred to the main
international hospital in Seoul. His family have now travelled out to see
him. It may be Typhoid fever contracted from his trip to India. Stephen
obviously will not be back for our talks next week: our thoughts are with
him. Leszek will update us all when he knows more.
Our application for funding to the Cambridge Energy Forum was not
immediately successful, although they are very keen to work together on
various projects. They suggested that they are hoping to develop "The
Cambridge Energy Papers",with an undergraduate essay competition. If you
have ideas of how we could collaborate with the Energy Forum, please let me
know. There email is enclosed at the bottom of this. Shin Yong is attending
the Cambridge University Energy Network tonight on CCS technology in UK and
China. He'll also discuss the next meeting of that group. I'm hoping to put
together a discussion on policies to promote low-emissions energy
generation, (maybe an initial discussion on 13th December, for something
more ambitious next term?) Let me know if you are interested in helping me
develop this meeting.
We need to attract more members and/or payment so that we can pay our
expenses at the end of term. Perhaps we should collect donations as well as
membership at the next talk. Please also update on University funding when
we get a chance.
I've now created/updated all the lists as requested. Details follow below:
simply append @zerocarbonnow.org to the list name.
I also enclose a xls with details of our membership and other useful
information. Please see below.
We have a Wikipedia-style wiki now installed on our website!! Thanks for
Gunnar for doing this!
The link is: http://www.zerocarbonnow.org/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page
Please have a think about the best way to set this up so that everyone can
contribute!
The next weeks are an ideal time to write to potential speakers before the
Christmas rush! We already have a local company who specialise in solar
heating systems who will give a presentation. We can also attract major
speakers, academics in Cambridge and potentially speakers from America and
further afield (by videoconference?!) If you have an idea for who you would
like to speak, please write to them directly. I enclose our normal logo for
use on letterheads. Usually, we can send out quite a few letters and then we
should get a few successes, as well as more direct personal approaches. If
everyone on this list writes to two or three speakers, and some people to
more, then we will have a fantastic programme next year.
At present I'm concentrating on policy, lobbying politicians, writing
comments to newspapers/online and putting together a plan to present to
companies.
I'll be back in Cambridge for all of next week: I'm looking forward to the
talk on Monday and the committee meeting followed by Christmas dinner on
Wednesday: Nicky please send details! I'll also attend the 1 day conference
on Friday on Sustainable Energy also looks particularly interesting. Then on
Sunday I'll be travelling to Sheffield for the national Campaign against
Climate Change meeting, where I'll introduce our society,
Hope to see you on Monday at about 6:30 at the Chemical Engineering
department. Please email Anna if you would like to dine with our speaker
after the event.
Best wishes,
Steve

Subject: Fund Request from Cam Zero Carbon
Leszek, Steve,
Your request has prompted us to consider fairly fundamentally what we do and
why we do it; quite apart from the campaigning/non-campaigning issue.
With CUEN also getting organised, and relations with MIT getting closer, we
have to be a bit more serious about how we deal with this sort of thing.
We like to see energy-related debate in Cambridge, but we should not be
spending our members' money on activities where other resources are
available and more appropriate. Also, though you may not realise this, it is
far easier for an undergraduate group to attract world-class speakers than
it is for us; and it is also easier (strangely) for an undergraduate group
to get the funds it needs. [Several of us have organised undergraduate
organizations in the distant past; and been involved with them more recently
too.] Postgraduate organisations always have very much more trouble
achieving critical mass.
So we would like to find ways of working together on joint issues and
projects, rather than just handing over cash. For instance, we have been
thinking for a year or so about publishing "The Cambridge Energy Papers"
with support from Cambridge University Press; and this naturally leads into
essay competitions and undergraduate journalism as well are more considered
academic articles. We also have recently had meetings with MIT's energy club
(in Cambridge USA) and will be meeting them again before Christmas. Also,
Prof.Nocera from MIT will be at the 1st Dec. event.
Do you have any other ideas? I'm sure you do.
I hope to see you at one or more of the multitude of events happing in the
next couple of weeks. We need to keep working on this.
Philip

Subject: mailing lists
Hi everyone,
At the meeting yesterday we discussed the fact that the current mailing
lists were a bit impractical and confusing because not all the active
members (as hopefully I think are all on this email!) were under the
coordination title but too many (all college reps etc) were on the committee
list so we proposed the new email groups:
* Committee - with just the active committee members for general
organising meetings, discussing options for things etc
* Reps - so they are on a separate list from committee as they don't
need every email. They can then be CCed in when appropriate or emailed
separately re rooms bookings etc.
* Design - as before
* Camlist - as before
The idea is then that noone is on 2 lists and it is easy to access the right
people.
Steve and Stephen, could you please let us know whether you agree with this
proposal so that Marc can make the necessary changes if so.
Thanks,
Nicky
