STRATEGY GATHERING FOR CLIMATE ACTION: 26-28 May, London

As you may have noticed, global emissions need to have peaked and
declined by 2015 to keep average temperature rise below 2 degrees C and
avoid runaway climate change. This will require enormous and fundamental
changes. What needs to happen over the next 8 years to bring this about?
How can we, as a small but growing direct action movement, most
effectively direct our energies?

To tackle these and other similar questions, a small group of us from the
Climate Camp have planned a Strategy Gathering for the climate direct
action movement, which will take place at the 491 Gallery in Leytonstone,
London from Saturday 26 to Monday 28 May (the Bank Holiday weekend). There
will be an introductory session on the evening of Friday 25th May.

The Gathering will feature a mixture of 'information download' from key
thinkers and campaigners, and actual strategising. We aim to give
ourselves an overview of what is happening in climate politics
internationally and in Britain, what the mainstream campaigning groups are
currently focussing on, solutions for a post-carbon future, learn about
movement-building (and successful examples), and look in-depth at
different sectors of the economy, such as energy, transport, housing, the
financial sector etc. There will also be the opportunity to use
strategising techniques such as Forcefield Analysis to help us weigh up
what types of action will prove most effective both for movement-building
and for actually halting the destruction of our climate.

We hope participants will go away with information, ideas for action and
strategy tools that they can use in their own affinity groups and
communities. We will also be producing a publication containing
information and ideas which will be distributed at the Climate Camp itself
and at the July organising meeting.

Speakers and workshop leaders so far confirmed include Larry Lohmann from
the Corner House, Charlie Kronick from Greenpeace, James Marriott from
Platform, Paul Mobbs, author of Energy Beyond Oil, Kathryn Tulip from
Corporate Watch, Naresh Giangrande from Transition Town Totnes and Jutta
Kill from Fern. Seeds for Change will provide facilitation.

The cost for attending the gathering is £30 (£15 concessionary rate). Any
money left over after covering costs will be donated to the Climate Camp.
We ask people to come for the whole weekend - there is little point
gaining information without using it to strategise, and little point
strategising if you don't have the necessary information. Please note that
places are limited to a maximum of 50 people, so it's worth booking early!

If you would like to come, please send a deposit of £15 (£7.50
concessionary rate) to:
Albedo, c/o. ECRA Publishing Ltd, Unit 21, 41 Old Birley Street,
Manchester M15 5RF
Please make cheques payable to: J. Lawson
Please include your postal address, email address and phone number. You
can use the form attached to this email.

Places will be confirmed by email, and tickets and further information
will be sent out at the beginning of May.
Crash space and vegan meals will be provided at the venue. Please let us
know if you need a bed.

Please email albedo at riseup.net if you have any queries.
