Are you fine with us meeting up on Tuesday anyway and getting some things
sorted? Especially as the logistics of the freshers fair won't be
particularly controversial, but we'll have to sort out rotas and stuff at
some point anyway.
Just to clarify the issue of the climate change campaign:
Short story, there is no campaign yet and no manifesto, but it will probably
be launched at the end of environment week, leaving 8 weeks for
preparations.
Long story:
Last year after Al Gore had been in Cambridge, some people (Christine Berry,
Mark Koller, Aneaka Kellay, Steve S, Emilia etc) decided that Cambridge
needed a climate change campaign. Christine and Dan, the current green
officers, are trying to get one going, but so far they have had little
feedback (although they could have tried harder). They want to launch the
campaign at the end of the 'Environment week', so they want to have some
manifesto by then. At the moment, due to how the meetings went, it looks
like it's going to be a local campaign only, which I personally think is not
a good idea(and from what we discussed at the climate camp, christine seems
to agree). Some people at the meeting of the green officers of the colleges
thought that a national campaign (that is with a national target and how to
achieve it) was high risk high reward and preferred a low risk-low reward,
meaning working at local level only (and with only those aims in the
campaign). I feel that a low risk, ie local, campaign has exactly no risk,
because it is bound to fail, for even if you hit the target, it was set too
low to mean anything. You basically retreat into the local for fear of
failing if we had higher targets.
Sorry for the ramble, but I think that this campaign could have potential if
done properly and I would love to see zero carbon soc get more involved with
it and try to get it started in the right direction. That's one of the
reasons why it would be great if Tim could come before and talk about
ZeroCarbonBritain, which should make it clear that local actions without
government intervention are not sufficient.
I think this also a point that we should just quickly discuss how we want to
be involved in it.
