Hi everyone,
I hope you all had a great end of term. Climate change wise, we hardly could
have ended it on a more positive note, with the channels buzzing on all
levels. With the new Australian government having signed documents to ratify
the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the Climate Change Conference in Bali
has opened on a very positive note! To show your support for binding global
targets, join the Global Day of Action this Saturday 8th December and sign
Avaaz petition.
Nationally, things are moving too. Cambridge was well represented at the
Student Climate Project's launch event in Oxford, which is building a mass
student anti-Climate change movement. At the same time, CUSU Green has
launched it's "GoGreener!" campaign, calling on the University of Cambridge
to take a global leading role in promoting sustainability and tackling
climate change.
1. Saturday 8th December, Global Day of Action, 12pm @ Millbank, London (if
you are in England)
2. Sign the petition to support decisive action on climate change at the
Bali conference:

3. Student Climate Project has been launched! Get involved!
All these projects and more require lots of helping hands, so do come back
refreshed after a Christmas break for an exciting term of action!
See you on Saturday, and in true Cambridge style, we wish you a merry
Christmas and a happy new year, 3 weeks early.
Your Zero Carbon Committee
1. Global Day of Action
See http://www.campaigncc.org/ for the exact schedule and location.
We will meet at the Cambridge train station at 9:45 am on Saturday 8th
December to go to London for the National Climate March. Do join us if you
are going from Cambridge, you should be able to spot us by our banner!
We hope to see you there!
2. Avaaz's petition for decisive action on climate change at the Bali
conference
Crucial climate negotiations have started this week Bali, Indonesia and it's
up to us to make sure the 192 governments there hear an urgent global outcry
for action. This Saturday, December 8, a wave of protests and marches will
sweep the globe--and Avaaz will make sure it hits the delegates' doorstep by
marching in Bali carrying your flag and a sign with the number of people
who've signed from your country. Getting involved is easy, just click on the
link below to join the virtual march:
http://www.avaaz.org/en/virtual_march_bali/98.php/?CLICK_TF_TRACK
The world knows what we need: a commitment to start working towards a new
binding international agreement immediately. We must show these governments
that the call to action is truly worldwide. The more people join, the more
powerful the Dec 8 march will become. Send your voice to Bali--sign the
petition below and become a part of the virtual march for climate action
now.

By coming together, we are creating an enormous global roar to remind world
governments that they must act now to prevent the climate crisis. It's
amazing what can happen when we work with each other.
Thanks!
3. The Student Climate Project
The Student Climate Project Launch Gathering in Oxford was a success, with
many exciting projects and actions planned for the coming year and beyond.
All that is needed now is everyone to get involved and make things happen.
The Student Climate Project is run along non-hierarchical consensus decision
making processes, and therefore everyone has an equal say.
The biggest decision made at the Gathering is for there to be a post-exam
Tour of Climate Action in the summer term of 2008. The tour will see student
activists working together by travelling around university campuses to
spread and inspire radical climate action amongst the wider student body.
The Tour is limited only to the imaginations of those who get involved, but
is set to include exciting participatory arts, theatre, education/workshops,
and actions against local climate criminals.
The Tour is part of The Student Climate Project's wider aim to reclaim
climate change from being all about numbers and adding up grams of carbon,
and instead to being something people can engage with emotionally and feel
politically passionate about. This is why finding new ways to express
climate change through the arts and education is so important, but equally
important is demonstrating and discussing the kinds of radical action and
strategies we want to see happen.
The Project is incredibly diverse and there are so many different ways to
get involved. With a Tour to organise in the coming months there's all sorts
of things to be done, from dealing with practical issues to dealing with the
creative side. We have Working Groups formed, which are open to all to get
involved with on any level, and you don't need any experience to get
involved. Our Working Groups include Arts, Education, Research, Actions,
Tech, Networking, and more!
The best way to get involved is to come along to our National Planning
Meeting on the 18th to 20th of January. The location is as yet uncomfirmed,
but will be announced very soon. The Meeting in January will be an
opportunity for creative brainstorming as well as forming a plan of action
for our Tour.
To be added to our email list or get involved, email our temporary email
address at studentclimateproject at hotmail.co.uk This is while our website (
www.studentclimateproject.org.uk) and email are being radically transformed
to communicate our projects as best as possible. By emailing this address
you can be put in touch with any of our working groups, who are currently
planning hard for the National Meeting in January.
Hope to see you all soon,
The Student Climate Project
