I guess this means we just carry on seeing as Kim has arranged to come
anyway. I'll email Kim saying he has more time and can do a longer talk if
he likes. Anyone got any other suggestions? Anyone we could invite to
speak on this topic at the last minute?
Nicky

Dear Nicky, Stephen & Stephen
I'm sorry to tell you I've gone down with 'flu and will be unable to deliver
my talk on Friday 2nd Feb.
I hope it can be re-arranged at a future date.

The talk could be called:
Sustainable communities and low carbon building design - what do we know and
how are we doing?
Brief description
I recently had the opportunity to review at - a very general level - a
number of planned settlements in UK and Europe in order to identify the
principles underpinning the design of sustainable communities. I am also the
Consortium Manager for Carbon Reduction in Buildings, a five-university
consortium studying energy use in the built environment. And I've spent much
of the last 20 years or so working on government programmes promoting energy
efficiency and energy conservation in the built environment. In this talk, I
will draw on these experiences to review our knowledge of how to achieve a
low carbon future, how we are implementing it, and what we've achieved.
Speaker biography
Sebastian Macmillan trained originally as an architect but went on to become
a partner in a small Cambridge-based research consultancy - Eclipse Research
Consultants. As an independent researcher and technical writer in the built
environment he has researched and written numerous good practice guides and
case studies for various government supported initiatives such as Action
Energy, Constructing Excellence, and the Commission for Architecture and the
Built Environment. He is currently Course Director for a Masters course
offered jointly by the university's Departments of Engineering and
Architecture.
Feel free to edit any of this.

Hi Sebastian,
Glad you're able to come! It'll be in the Ramsden Room in St Catherine's
college, which has a capacity of 100 or so. Given there are 2 speakers, I
suggest about 30 mins each to allow time for question and answers as well.
Would you please be able to give me a title for your talk and a brief
description so we can get started on publicity as soon as possible?
Thanks,
Nicky

Hi Nicky
Yes I'd be pleased to do this. Can you let me know how much time I will
have? And the location?
Thanks, Sebastian

Subject: Sustainable cities event on 2nd February
Hi Sebastian,
Would you like to come and speak for the Zero Carbon Society at an event
about sustainable cities/design etc on Friday 2nd February at 7.30? So far,
we have Kim Gyr confirmed to speak on the subject: Blue sky design for
sustainable cities - 'The Fun New World of NO ENERGY'. We would like you to
give a talk at the same event as your subject areas are similar and it makes
more sense to hold one joined-up event than two smaller ones in order to
attract a better audience and to enable further discussion.
We also plan to invite a representative to update us briefly on plans for
zero carbon construction plans in Cambridge which would follow nicely from
more general talks about this subject.
Please let us know as soon as possible whether you would like to speak for
us on this date so we can make a start on publicity and so on.
Thanks and best wishes,
Nicky
