Hey,

first, Chris Rapley can't come to 23rd Oct, but I invited Peter Cox.

I am a member of the Union and Pablo is probably as well. I think we can
easily pass as a political organisation in some way.

One reason that I see for not doing it together with CUEUS and AGEE is that
I fear the cc focus will be lost. If we don't mind so much about that and
rather want to network with other societies, that is fine. But if we want to
get people involved in our workgroups or similar, I think (but might be
wrong) that that kind of event would not serve us so well. Moreover, we
wouldn't be able to invite the other groups to their event, I doubt they'd
like to be overrun with other groups joining in.

My proposal is that we should still try and pull off the thing on the 8th
October, but go along to the CUEUS squash (2 or 3 people suffice) to get to
know them better. More work of course.

But it's up to you when you meet next week, I'll be back on saturday and go
along with it, as we won't have the time to make much organising in the
first 2 weeks, with fresher's fair and all that.

A few things that should be discussed (and hopefully sorted) at the meeting:

- need to send out an email to camlist, we should ask them if anyone wants
to help with the freshers' fair, have a quick list of the most important
things going on this term. Send it to committee first, just in case
something was left off and has to be sent out again.

- rota for fresher's fair (also depends on replies from camlist, but there
should be at least one of us at each time)

- As Steve said, we should appoint people to be main contacts for certain
working groups, need to discuss which etc. Being main contact doesn't mean
you'll be responsible for the group, but for trying to set it up and passing
responsibility on. At least people will know whom to approach.

- Squash (I've said my bit above)

- We should have a strategic meeting early in term (before climate coalition
on 14th Oct), to discuss or just confirm where we are going long-term. Not
sure this is necessary, but from talk on other email-lists, there is a hell
of a lot confusion out there, and it'd be great if we knew at least our aim

Here are some working groups that I thought about, I don't think we should
do them all, but it's good to have a wide range in mind, in case you meet
someone who happens to be superkeen on just that! Lots of them might overlap
and most groups don't need more than half a person in the beginning, but
someone should feel responsible for certain areas.

- Administration (this is really what the pres/vice pres/sec are doing,
doesn't need to be called differently)
- Coordination (coordinating all the working groups; might look pointless at
the beginning, but if we want this to be able to grow, the structure has to
be there from the start!)
- Financial (we do need money, whether we like it or not; includes
everything from applying for grants, fundraising etc)
- Publicity
- Media (like having a newsletter, getting articles out to student papers
and others, maybe having one ourselves; Pete Wood is thinking about starting
an Ecologist like student paper, he'd be great)
- Science
- Economics
- Politics
- Lobbying (for instance our thing on the climate bill, might be together
with politics)
- IT
- Direct Action (yeah, I know, this might put off some people... still think
it's a good idea)
- Education
- Outreach
- Design

Sorry for yet another long email by yours truly annoying, but I won't be
there for the meeting, so wanted to air my thoughts here.

Marc
