Dear Mr. Stretton,
*
Invitation to the APPCCG Meeting on REDD
**Tuesday 19th February, 3-5pm
Committee Room 6, House of Commons*
I am pleased to invite you to the APPCCG (All Party Parliamentary Climate
Change Group) meeting on REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and
Degradation), in conjunction with ODI (Overseas Development Institute) and
GCP (Global Canopy Programme). This meeting will focus on the progress made
on REDD at the recent Bali COP, key questions in the development of REDD
over the next two years and how challenges relating to the politics and
practical implementation of REDD policies and projects might be resolved,
for "if we lose tropical forests, we will lose the fight against climate
change" (Sir Michael Somare, Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, speaking in
Bali.)
It is now widely agreed that deforestation and degradation are a source of
up to 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions and therefore a vital issue in
debates about mitigating climate change. Large-scale financial mechanisms
(possibly linked to carbon markets) may offer a cost-effective means of
incentivising tropical developing countries to reduce deforestation rates,
if effective policies can be put in place. In addition to mitigating climate
change, REDD also has the potential to contribute significant environmental
and social benefits in developing countries.
This meeting brings together key REDD negotiators and observers:
Kevin Conrad, Papua New Guinea
John Lanchberry, RSPB
Jim Penman, Defra
Presentations will be followed by a question and answer session. Please
enter by St. Stephen's Gate and please allow enough time to pass through
security. If you would like to attend this meeting, please contact Caroline
Spencer on caroline.spencer at carbonneutral.comor tel: 020 7833 6035.
Kind Regards,
Colin Challen
MP
