Fixing Climate: The story of climate science and how to stop it

3rd Jun 2008; 18:00

RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ

With Wallace Broecker, Newberry Professor of Earth & Environmental
Sciences at Columbia University; Robert Kunzig, author of Mapping the
Deep, winner of the Royal Society Aventis Science Book of the Year;
Lord Oxburgh, geologist and former Chairman of Shell Transport and
Trading; and Harry Elderfield FRS, Professor of Earth Sciences at the
University of Cambridge

Chaired by Professor Chris Turney, Chair in Physical Geography at the
University of Exeter

The story of climate science is a tale of extraordinary discoveries
and maverick thinkers - mavericks such as Wallace Broecker, the
pre-eminent scientist who is often cited as coining the phrase "global
warming" way back in 1975.

Broecker has warned that the planet's climate can act like a volatile
beast, changing with astonishing abruptness from ice-age to much
warmer interglacials, and that we prod this beast (by pumping billions
of tonnes of CO2 into the air each year) at our peril. Broecker argues
that simply reducing emissions is not enough. It is almost certain
that fossil fuels will remain a major part of our lives – in
particular our transport system. We must start removing our carbon
waste from our atmosphere. In his new book Fixing Climate, Broecker
describes a possible solution - giant 'artificial trees' that could
pull CO2 directly from the air.

Join our expert panel at the RSA for an in-depth analysis of the state
we're in, and a radical new solution for saving our planet.
